Manage your stress with Tisserand Aromatherapy

Stress is something that we face at some point in our lives. Things like pressure at work or school, sudden negative changes, relationship issues or conflicts can cause stress. Short-term stress is okay for us and even can be helpful. For example, moving to a new house, going to holiday or starting a new job can keep us active and motivated. This is what psychologists refer to as “positive stress” or “eustress”. But long-term stress or “distress” can impact on our moods, digestion and sleep, causing physical and mental problems.

There are ways to deal with stress

Stress can’t be managed by stopping it or denying its existence, but rather by coping with it in a healthy way. There are many stress-management techniques and common-sense tips that might help alleviate and ease stress level. Suggestions include exercises on a regular basis, yoga and meditation, relaxation procedures, aromatherapy, getting enough rest and sleep, eating sensibly and much more.

  1. Take a Walk

You don’t have to go to the gym to get active, and just going outside can improve your mood and body. Just 30 minutes of walking a day can help lift your mood and improve your wellbeing. Physically active people have up to a 30% reduced risk of becoming depressed, and staying active helps those who are depressed recover.

  1. Learn Tai Chi

Originally developed in China as a martial art for self-defence. Tai Chi has evolved into a graceful form of exercise that is now used to balance energy levels, whilst alleviating stress and stimulating harmony between mind, emotions and body. Tai Chi encourages an awareness of breathing patterns. So, it can be especially helpful to people who hyperventilate when feeling stressed or anxious.

  1. Try Aromatherapy

Aromatherapy is one of the most practical and enjoyable ways to help us destress. Various studies have shown that aromatherapy has important stress-relieving and balancing effects when used as part of an overall complementary approach to healing the mind and body. Essential oils can stimulate a powerful sense of emotional, mental and physical wellbeing. When breathed in, the essential oil molecules can pass directly through the blood-brain barrier and affect the regions of the brain that regulate stress and anxiety.

Essential oils can be used in a variety of ways, such as (1) inhalation and diffusion, (2) in special blends that can be used as massage and body oils, (3) adding to the bathwater to create relaxing and soothing bathing experience.

Please remember that essential oils should not be used undiluted on the skin. Also, be sure to dilute or disperse essential oils in a suitable medium before adding them to your bath.

If you are new to aromatherapy, it is best to buy ready-to-use essential oil blends. They are formulated and crafted by scientists and aromatherapy experts. So, no need to worry about dilution rates.
